The Benefits of Co-Sleeping

If you ask me what my number one must-have item was when I gave birth it was my Arm’s Reach co-sleeper. I have been recommending it to all of my friends since had my son two years ago. It allows you to sleep safely with your little one, right next to your bed

Being a solid believer in attachment parenting, I am a huge proponent of having your baby sleep with you in your room for the first year of his life. Some may think this is too long, I know others who thought it was too short. It’s all subjective but the one thing I do know is that co-sleeping with my child helped alleviate some of my newbie mother anxieties and provided peace of mind which is the one thing a rookie mama really needs when she has just given birth. Yes, I was one of those moms that would check her baby’s breathing every half hour (which was ever so convenient because my co-sleeper was attached right to the bed). Breast-feeding was a breeze because I was able to roll over without turning on the lights (thus not waking my husband) and feed my baby every two hours. There’s also something so comforting and special about being able to reach over and just touch your beautiful baby whenever you want to (which I did A LOT in the beginning as I could hardly believe I had given birth and was a full fledged mummy). It was sort of like pinching myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming this amazing experience (except so much better and not painful!)

The Arm’s Reach® Co-Sleeper® Bedside Bassinet is an award-winning, revolutionary creation that began with a mother and father’s need for a safe and secure sleeping environment for their child. Concerned that modern beds or cribs weren’t appropriate for a tiny baby’s space, they ingeniously solved this problem by placing the child right at the side of the bed – literally within arm’s reach! It is the only patented cosleeping product on the market that offers exclusive method for attaching the babies sleep space securely to the side of the parent’s bed. You and your baby sleep safely and comfortably next to each other from the moment the two of you come home. It affords all of the benefits of parent-child proximity while providing the safest cosleeping experience.

The Co-Sleeper is a suspended cradle environment much like that of the mother’s womb, and the gentle swinging motion magically soothes your crying baby.

Here are my top reasons why co-sleeping is the best for your baby:

Bonding: Nothing compares to actually physically being in close proximity to your newborn. It helps you as the mother (and the father too) learn about your baby and his behaviour, about his wants and needs. It’s fantastic “on-site” training if you will and it helps you acclimate to motherhood much faster.

Breastfeeding ease: Having the co-sleeper attached to your bed makes breastfeeding a cinch. You don’t have to get out of bed. Believe me this becomes important when you are breastfeeding every 1-2 hours. Breastfeeding itself can be a bit difficult for new mothers at the beginning. Having my baby next to me made the whole thing easier for me.

Studies have found that co-sleeping babies breastfeed twice as often as babies who sleep alone in their nurseries.                                                        - Scientific Benefits of Co-Sleeping

Baby AND Mum sleep better: If you’re anything like me (and most of the women of this world) then it is not the easiest thing in the world to fall back asleep once you have been woken. For some reason men seem to be able to get up and fall asleep at the drop of a hat while most women I’ve encountered usually have the same issue of the difficulty of getting back to sleep once woken.

This was why I loved my co-sleeper. I didn’t have to get out of my bed and trudge over to the nursery to sit in my glider and breastfeed. If I had to do that every time my son needed to be fed I don’t think I would have ever slept during the first year of his life! I was also very comfortable in my bed, warm and cozy and so I didn’t have to move much to get my son to feed him.

Research has also proven that babies who sleep with their parents sleep more peacefully. This is because babies that sleep alone have to cry four times longer than their counterparts to get the attention of their mother. Startling and crying releases adrenaline, which increases heart rate and blood pressure, interferes with restful sleep and leads to long term sleep anxiety.

Scientific Benefits of Co-Sleeping

Decreases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: In Asia, SIDS is not that prevalent precisely because co-sleeping is more of the norm.

Babies who sleep either in or next to their parents’ bed have a fourfold decrease in the chance of SIDS. Further research shows that the carbon dioxide exhaled by a parent actually works to stimulate baby’s breathing.

Scientific Benefits of Co-Sleeping

Bed bonding results in more independent children: Studies have indicated that children that have been firmly attached to their parents become independent faster and more easily compared with children that are insecurely attached. They can end up being anxious or overly dependent.

Co-sleeping babies grow up with a higher self-esteem, less anxiety, become independent sooner, are better behaved in school, and are more comfortable with affection. They also have less psychiatric problems.

Co-sleeping with Kieran was one of the best years of my life. I developed this wonderful bond with my child, was able to get to know him as a baby and myself as a mother. When the year was up and my husband told me it was time for Kieran to move to his own room I was sad no doubt but that’s the natural progression of life. It all goes by so fast. One year of co-sleeping is one of the best things you can do for your child’s development. I will co-sleep with all my future children using my Arms Reach Co-sleeper.

What the experts say:

The Arm’s Reach® Co-Sleeper® Bedside Bassinet is the only authentic co-sleeper bassinet recommended by leading pediatricians and sleep research experts, Dr. William Sears and Dr. James McKenna:

Besides enhancing bonding between parents and their baby, the Arm’s Reach® bassinet provides night-time security that benefits a growing baby’s emotional development,” says Doctor William Sears, Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine and author of over one dozen guides including The Baby Book. “Sleeping within arm’s reach makes night feedings easier. It is also contemporary. Sleeping close to their infant allows parents to make up for missed touch time during the day and to reconnect with their baby at night.

“Just as we have rediscovered the benefits of nursing, so too, we predict in the next ten years we will discover the benefits of the other half of it, infant-parent sleep contact and proximity or co-sleeping,“ says Doctor James J. McKenna, Ph.D., Professor of Biological Anthropology and Director of the Mother-Baby Sleep Laboratory University of Notre Dame. “I believe that Arm’s Reach® has created an important way of making it possible for babies to receive the kind of night-time care we all take for granted as being needed for babies during the night.

Regardless of the numerous scientific and medical benefits, simply having your baby close by can provide both of you an invaluable sense of comfort and closeness.

With busier-than-ever schedules and lives, connecting with your new baby on a daily basis can be difficult. The Arm’s Reach® co-sleeper can greatly ease the emotional and physical burdens of infant care by bonding you and your little one even closer together.
